The best time to visit Vietnam is March to April and October to November.

  • March – April → Best overall weather across the country
  • October – November → Best for North Vietnam & trekking
  • November – April → Best for southern beaches
  • May – September → Cheapest, but hottest and rainiest

Now let’s break it down properly.

If you asked me one question I’ve heard more than anything else after living and traveling across Vietnam for over 7 years, it would be this:

“When is the best time to visit Vietnam?”

And honestly… I used to give a simple answer. Something like “spring” or “autumn.”

But after sweating through brutal summers in Hanoi, chasing golden rice fields in Sapa, getting caught in tropical downpours in Ho Chi Minh City, and enjoying empty beaches in Phu Quoc… I realized something:

There is no single “perfect” time for all of Vietnam.

Vietnam stretches over 1,600 km from north to south, and the weather can be completely different depending on where you are.

So in this guide, I’ll share what I’ve learned the hard way—through real experiences, not just weather charts—so you can choose the best time based on your travel style.

Before diving into months, here’s something I wish I understood earlier:

Vietnam has three distinct regions, each with its own weather pattern:

  • North Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Giang, Ha Long Bay)
→ 4 seasons: winter, spring, summer, autumn
  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An)
→ Dry season + heavy rainy season
  • South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc)
→ Wet season vs dry season (warm all year)

This means you can have:

  • Cold fog in Sapa
  • Flooding rains in Hoi An
  • Perfect beach weather in Phu Quoc

…all at the same time.

Visiting Vietnam by Season (My Real Experience)

Spring (March – April): The Sweet Spot

This is hands down my favorite time to travel across Vietnam.

I remember riding a motorbike from Hanoi to Ninh Binh in late March—the air was fresh, not humid, and everything was unbelievably green.

What it feels like:

  • Comfortable temperatures (20–30°C)
  • Low humidity (rare in Vietnam!)
  • Clear skies in most regions

Why it’s great:

  • Perfect for both cities and nature
  • Ideal for Ha Long Bay cruises
  • Great for trekking in Sapa without heavy fog

Downside:

  • It’s popular → slightly higher prices
  • Some light drizzle in the north (but manageable)

If you’re visiting Vietnam for the first time, choose this period.
